The 2014 NFL Draft is one week away. There’s hope for every team, even the Cleveland Browns.
Don’t pick any quarterback with the #4 pick on Thursday, May 8th, 2014. Don’t be pressured to pick a quarterback with the #26 pick either. Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, and to a lesser extent, Teddy Bridgewater, are the consensus top 3 quarterbacks in the NFL Draft. With Houston picking first, and quarterback needy, the Jacksonville Jaguars picking third, definitely quarterback needy, and the St. Louis Rams, picking second, will most likely trade with another quarterback needy team, there’s going to be a lot of action for the three quarterbacks listed above. Avoid this action Cleveland Browns and fill a big need … someone to play opposite Josh Gordon.
Also, in the 3 picks before Cleveland, you have the Jadeveon Clowney factor, the best pass rushing prospect ever. All the tools.
There’s going to be crazy trade action going on in the first 3 picks, you’re solid at #4, and the clear choice is Sammy Watkins, WR from Clemson. Just fill a huge need with one of the top WR propects in years. Brian Hoyer can get him the ball at the beginning of the season. Watkins, paired with Josh Gordon, Jordan Cameron, Ben Tate at running back, that is a solid foundation for an offense and I believe the Cleveland Browns can find someone serviceable at QB for the 2014-2015 NFL season. Maybe Hoyer. Maybe Vince Young. Maybe Tyler Thigpen. Maybe me. I’ll try out, I have a decent arm and I’m throwing to Josh Gordon, Sammy Watkins (although he’ll be a rookie), Jordan Cameron, and handing the ball to a beast of RB who plays hurt.
After pick #4, Cleveland has 4 more picks in the next 79. 5 selections through the first 3 rounds. To fill needs. Besides finding someone to play opposite Josh Gordon, Cleveland needs to find someone to play opposite Joe Haden at CB. Cleveland needs either or a guard or tackle. Cleveland needs an Inside Linebacker. And, Cleveland needs a QB. That’s 5 glaring needs with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds.
Round 1, Pick 4- Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
Round 1, Pick 26 – Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State. Bring an Ohio boy to town, that’s always popular. And this team needs excitement.
Round 2, Pick 35 – Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville – if he’s there grab him. If not, and Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois, is available, grab him. Grab Tajh Boyd. The whole point is there are going to be guys to take a risk on with this pick. Plus you have 3rd round picks to play with.
Round 3, Pick 71 – Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State. Apparently one of Cleveland’s tackles can be switched to guard. There’s also this guy from University of Nevada Reno, I always root for players from this school, who plays all 3 positions on the offensive line, Joel Bitonio G/C/OT. No problem if you use pick #26 on a guy like this. He can play any position on the offensive line, how useful is this?
Round 3, Pick 83 – Keith McGill, CB, Utah – a big physical corner. Richard Sherman has showed us the way.
And a special shout out to Walterfootball.com.
